How To Protect Your Downtown Columbia, Mo Apartment

After your last final gets out, you’ll probably be rushing home to throw things in a bag and head home for a month to spend time with friends and family back in your hometown. But there are things you need to do in preparation for the month ahead. And even though you won’t be living in your apartment for a month, you will still want to take care of it.

Get Your Mail Forwarded Home

Winter breaks are pretty long, so you should think about getting your mail forwarded to your parents’ home. You won’t want to fall behind on any bills or important school information that might get mailed to you. If you’re not worried about missing out on bills or information, you can also submit a “hold mail” request to your local post office, and it will keep your mailbox from overflowing.

Empty Your Fridge

If you’re about to head home and your refrigerator is full, try and eat as much as you can or invite your friends over and try to empty it. After you’ve diligently tried to get rid of all of your food and there’s still some left sitting in the fridge that will go bad, throw it out. You won’t want to deal with that stink mess when you come back for the spring semester. And also, when your fridge is full, it will run harder to keep the food cold, which uses more power. And will cause a higher electricity bill.

Turn your Heat Down

It doesn’t seem smart to heat an empty apartment, especially when winter utilities are already so expensive, but you should definitely keep your heat on. But you can turn it way down while you are away at home for the holidays. A frozen apartment during a brutal winter can lead to busted pipes and water damage to your apartment and belongings.

Turn off the Water

With the harsh Missouri winters, you will want to turn the water off in your apartment. If the water stays in the pipes and freezes while you are away, you will come back to your apartment with an unpleasant surprise. Pipes can possibly explode or just stop working. But since you’ll be gone for a month, it’s time to lock up the windows and close the shades so there’s no one peeking into your apartment. Plus, closing the blinds can help keep your energy bills low.

Unplug Everything

Be sure to unplug everything in your apartment that doesn’t need to be plugged in, including everything from lights to computers. You can significantly decrease the electricity costs, depending on the time you’ll be away. Leaving lights on and things plugged in could be a possible fire hazard as well, so this should be at the top of your list of things to do and the last thing you check for. After you’re done packing and heading out the door, do one last walk-through before leaving.

Maintenance at the Lofts is included in your rent fees, so you won’t be responsible for repair fees. 5 Tips To Keep Your Utility Costs Low

Everyone knows the frustration of opening an unexpectedly high monthly utility bill. Because the cost of utilities varies between our residents based on their lifestyles, water and electric services for the Lofts of Columbia are billed separately by the City of Columbia. Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your utility costs low during the warmer months of spring and summer.

Tip #1: Wash your laundry in cold water and with the right amount of water.

The Department of Energy says the cold and warm water settings of high-efficiency washers are effective in removing most common soils and stains, and switching from hot to cold can reduce the amount of energy used per cycle by half . Unless you’re dealing with an oil-based stain, you can use cold water for almost any type of fabric.

As you’re starting a load of laundry, be sure to select the right setting for its size. It’s best to do one full load at time to maximize water use, but a smaller load requiring less water would be appropriate if you’re just washing a few things.

And, do you know what all of Laundry care symbols noted on the tag of your favorite shirt mean? Decoding these can help you understand how to wash individual items so you aren’t drying your garments for too long (or shrinking that shirt in the process).

Tip #2: Use ceiling fans and window shades to stay cool.

Running your air conditioner is often the most expensive portion of your monthly utilities. The most efficient practice is to choose a comfortable temperature and program your thermostat to hold that setting automatically. The Department of Energy recommends staying in the range of 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer months. When you’re away from home, you can raise the thermostat as high as 78 degrees to maximize savings.

You can also make your apartment feel cooler without cranking the AC by keeping the blinds drawn during the day to reduce heat generated by sunlight. If you feel too warm, try running a ceiling fan to keep cool air circulating throughout the apartment, just make sure it’s set correctly.

How do you know if What is the Proper Ceiling Fan Direction? ? Turn the fan on and stand directly underneath. The blades should be rotating counterclockwise and you should feel air flowing down. If they aren’t, then you can adjust the toggle switch near the motor to reverse the direction – just make sure it’s turned off first! (Don’t forget to toggle the switch back in the Fall so your fan rotates clockwise instead, producing a subtle updraft to force warm air down and around your room.)

Tip #3: Turn off the lights when you’re not in the room.

Leaving the lights on when you’re not home isn’t costing you too much, but getting in the habit of switching them off before you leave can have a snowball effect on your energy savings. A few dollars a month off your electricity bill adds up to significant savings in the long run.

Opt for efficient light bulbs and only use as much light as you need. Turn them off if you’re not in the room, but avoid unnecessary flipping on and off to maximize the lifespan of your bulbs.

Tip #4: Streamline your showers.

The Department of Energy – REDUCE HOT WATER USE FOR ENERGY SAVINGS the cost of heating water accounts for about 18% of most households’ energy bill. The EPA has calculated that an average person’s shower, which lasts roughly eight minutes, uses more than 18 gallons of water. So, if you take hot showers on a daily basis, you may be spending more than you think running your hot water heater.

You can reduce that cost by cutting your showers down to five or six minutes, which will also help conserve water. We suggest making a playlist of a couple of songs and timing your shower accordingly to help you keep it short. If you absolutely cannot cut down on time, consider reducing the temperature by a few degrees instead.

Tip #5: Buy Energy Star rated appliances and electronics.

The stove, microwave, refrigerator, washer and dryer units and living room TV – all of which are included in your apartment at the Lofts of Columbia – are Energy Star rated, so you can rest assured we’re helping you maximize your savings. If you decide to furnish your apartment with additional appliances, such as a TV for your bedroom, make sure they are all labeled as energy efficient.

Smaller devices, such as your coffee maker or hair straightener, continue pulling electrical currents when they’re plugged into the wall, even if the power has been switched off. It’s a simple practice to keep these smaller appliances unplugged unless you’re using them, and can also eliminate the nagging doubt of whether you remembered to turn them off before you left your apartment!

8 Moving Tips for Your Next Apartment

In a growing, business-centric city like Columbia, moving into a new apartment can be difficult. Busy workers and students don’t have the time to plan out their moving schedule, and traffic-heavy areas like downtown or strip malls are hard to get around with moving trucks. Luckily, we have some tips that will help ease the moving process!

Before moving

1. Update all billing information.

If you’re moving from a previous apartment, fill out a change of address form by the U.S. Postal Service, cancel or transfer utility or cable bills, and call your bank to move accounts (if necessary).

2. Find out what the apartment does and doesn’t have.

Call ahead of time or check out the website to see which furniture or items you need to buy. For example, the apartment may come with a TV but no sofa.

3. Have space-saving furniture ready.

Apartments aren’t always the biggest, but bookcases, racks and shelving units are helpful for saving space.

4. How to pack.

Get moving boxes from office supplies stores or grocery stores where they’re free, color code or categorize your packing boxes by room so you know where each box belongs, and wrap breakables in towels or sheets to save space!

Moving day

5. Have move-in time slots.

Move furniture like mattresses and couches at the same time because the area around the apartment complex may be crowded. Try to move boxes and the rest of your items at the same time as well.

6. Prop open doors and gates leading to your apartment.

Clearing a path to easily move into your apartment makes the time go by faster.

7. Moving large furniture.

If your car is big enough, roof bars can be a good option for quickly moving one large item. If you don’t have roof bars or a spacious car, borrow a pickup truck from a friend or family member, or rent a U-Haul. Make sure to have one or more people with you to move pieces like mattresses and couches.

8. Walk through the apartment.

After you’ve dropped off all your boxes, double check to make sure the electricity and utilities are working in the apartment. Contact the landlord if not.
